Painting, 2022

I work after paintings from the history of Western art, integrating images from the news and popular culture. I investigate the interaction between the body, my materials, and the images and representations that construct my identity as a female painter. I reclaim the space for the active female body in the image and practice of painting. As I work, new narratives develop in front of my eyes, putting history into dialogue with the present moment. The paintings occupy the space between representation and abstraction, invoking a sense of fleshiness as color and movement. I aim to represent the body through its action, in a way that defies objectification.
